The Tempest

By: David L. Jorns

Age Level: Middle Grades to College
Cast: 11 players, mixed
Time: 25 minutes

Prospero, a magician and the former duke of Milan, guides the audience through this shortened version of Shakespeare’s mystical classic. After a shipwreck, Prospero and his daughter Miranda survive to be isolated on an island inhabited by the monster Caliban and the spirit Ariel. Soon, by magic, there’s a second shipwreck which delivers to the isle a few of Prospero’s evil adversaries and the King’s son, Ferdinand. Miranda falls in love with Ferdinand. Prospero learns to forgive the others. Charity and wisdom triumph over greed as the interlopers return to Milan. An excellent brief way to acquaint students with Shakespearean language and have fun in the process.
